Join the fun – crazy Purim celebrations in Netanya Thursday 21 March 2019

Netanya celebrates Purim on 21 March – with a crazy “Adloyada” (literal English translation “until one doesn’t know”) based on the custom of being so happy (and often a little drunk) for the Jews being saved from death (by order of Haman) by Queen Esther, the Jewish wife of King Ahashverus, and Mordechai, her uncle.  No school, a family day, music, entertainment, kids and adults galore in fantastic innovative costumes, special exhibits, giant dolls, jugglers, clowns, 1,500 dancers from schools and dance groups – all in the spirit of an upside-down, confused and crazy world.

A street party for teenagers will take place on March 19 at the new Independence Square, which will turn between 12 – 4pm into a “paper square” with a variety of DJ’s and surprises.

On Thursday, March 21 from 12 – 3pm. down the length of Shalom Aleichem St. (from west to east – Ben Gurion Blvd. to Ben Zvi Blvd) with Yuval Hamebolbal (Crazy Yuval – entertainer).

Free shuttles back and forth will operate from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
* from Beit Feldman on Ben Gurion Blvd
* from the western parking lot of Netanya Stadium
* from the corner of Weizmann and Sokolov, near the public park
* from Neot Ganim Ovadia Park
* from Agamim neighborhood, 8 Agam Kinneret St., near the bus stop.

On Friday, March 22, a colourful ‘happening’ will take place in “Herzl Street mall” in the city centre (between Stampfer and Dizengoff) with dozens of street artists, stilt walkers , jugglers, live sculptures, drummers from Tremolo percussion center,  graffiti shows, dance groups, magic and children’s shows starring Livluvit, Nofiki, Nati and more.

On Friday, March 22, 2019, from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m

Entrance is free – everybody’s invited!

Celebrate Shavuot – the ‘dairy’ festival – 19/20 May 2018

Shavuot is a holiday that commemorates one of the most important events in Jewish history – when the Torah was given to us at Mount Sinai.  For many, it is customary to spend the night learning.  Traditionally, we eat dairy produce over Shavuot – especially cheesecake – traditional or fancy !  And it being a statutory holiday, many families picnic in the parks or at the beach.  In addition, falling on a Sunday this year, it makes a nice long weekend !

Why do we eat dairy produce?  www.chabad.org/shavuot  gives interesting explanations.

Chag Shavuot Sameach.

Purim is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in Israel. Purim here is embraced by the whole country, from kids to adults, by both religious and secular Jews, it is a time of fancy dress, festivity and is celebrated far beyond its original religious roots. Purim is celebrated across Israel, with street parties with carnival atmospheres taking place in almost every city, town and village in the country. Special foods for Purim are eaten, including Hamantaschen (Oznei Haman) – sweet pastry typically filled with sweet poppy seed, but also with jam, chocolate, dates or nuts.

Purim is also one of the biggest nights of the year at clubs up and down the country. With so much going on, and so much color in the amazing costumes that can be seen, Purim in Israel is a fascinating time to be in the country.
